Tip Tuesday: Tontouring, The Newest Beauty Hack To Contouring!

Tontouring, The Newest Beauty Hack To Contouring, By Barbie's Beauty Bits and Marissa Carter

There are so many beauty techniques out there; it is hard to keep up.  The big makeup talk for years has been highlighting and contouring, that was put on the beauty map by Kim Kardashian.  But boy has it gone to another level.  Now we have Strobing and Tontouring.  But what are these beauty techniques all about?

Well, I guess I’ve been strobing for years and just called it glow lighting.  But Tontouring, I’m so sad that I didn’t coin this phrase as I’ve been doing it for a while, (but with airbrush tanning).

So What Heck is Tontouring?

It is a term that has been coined by Marissa Carter, the founder of Coco Brown, who demonstrated this technique in her snapchat account and has blown up in the beauty world!  This technique is a longer lasting way to contour.  Instead of contouring with a bronzer or a foundation that is a few shades darker that your skintone, you can use a self-tanner to “tontouring”, giving you a longer lasting look.

“It’s every woman’s dream to look good without makeup, and this technique gives you the opportunity to wake up looking naturally perfectly contoured,” Marissa Carter told the Daily Mail. “This technique means you only need to contour once a week as opposed to every day.”

So Why Is Contouring Such A Big Deal?

The purpose of contouring is to create the perfect cheekbone, define the nose and enhance the overall structure of your face.  However, once you wash your makeup off, bye bye goes your sculpted thinner looking face!  Using the Tontouring technique will allow you to have that look even after you wash off your makeup, as the self-tanner will last for days!

So if you want to find out more about Tontouring, read Marissa Carter’s step by step Tontouring guide here!

Top Beauty Hacks: How To Use Your Makeup In Multiple Ways!

Top Beauty Hacks: How To Use Your Makeup In Multiple Ways, by Barbie's Beauty Bits

Looking pretty can sure cost a lot sometimes! But what if I told you, that some of the common makeup products have multiple uses.  Awesome, right? Plus, it can help you save money and time. Especially, if it’s one of those days you need to get out the door quickly, while still looking BEAUTYful! In addition to the many uses to save money, using these products correctly can also help you to save, by getting the most out of your products.  See below some of my top favorites beauty hacks, to use makeup in multiple ways…

White Eyeliner Beauty Hacks:
Using the color white near the inner corner of your eyes and your waterline will give the illusion of larger eyes. You can also use a white eyeliner as an illuminator or a white eyeshadow for that extra pop.  Additionally, apply as a highlighter on the bridge of your nose and brow bone.  Lastly, use it as a primer on your eyes, this will make the colors bold and darker.

Mascara Beauty Hacks:
This can be used to both your eyelashes and eyebrows, used as an eyeliner, as well as covering gray hairs.

Save money by making your mascara last longer:
  • Apply a non-waterproof mascara first, doing this will help with easy removal.
  • Place the waterproof mascara on top of the coat of non-waterproof.
  • Combining the two will give you the benefits of having a great smear proof curled lash, which will last all day, with easy removal.

Lipstick Beauty Hacks:
Use lipstick as a blush, concealer and the apparent, on your lips!  Depending on the color, it can also be use on your eyes!

While I don’t need to explain how to use your lipstick as a blush or as an eyeshadow.  I’m sure you're wondering how in the heck can I use lipstick as a concealer?!  Well, lipstick works wonders on getting rid of dark under eye circles.  Keep in mind you can’t use any color of lipstick; you need to consider your skin tone.  If you have darker skin, bright orange-red lipstick works best when trying to conceal. Why does this work?  Think of a color wheel, where colors can neutralize each other. Dark circles usually appear as blue or green.  Using a bright orange-red color, which is the opposite on a color wheel, helps to counteract the darkness, hence minimizing the appearance of dark circles.

Lipstick Beauty Hacks, By Barbie's Beauty Bits

Eyeliner Pencil:
Use this bad boy as an eyeliner, brow liner, eyeshadow for a smoking eye look and to contour your nose (use brown for the nose).   Eyeliner is also an excellent way to making your eyelashes appear thicker. By just applying some black eyeliner to the upper waterline.

Bronzer Beauty Hacks:
This one takes the cake! As it can be used as an eyeshadow, to contour and applied to your cheeks. The best one for bronzer is using it to make your eyelashes appear thicker. By dusting your lashes with it before applying your mascara. This will allow the mascara to adhere to the lashes, building thickness. This is an excellent DIY approach to the fiber formula mascaras! Just 90% cheaper!

Blush Beauty Hacks:
Aside from the obvious, which is applying to your cheekbones, this little beauty works wonders on your lips.  You can mix it with a gloss or even layer it with another color to create a shimmer lip color.  It also works fabulously as an eye shadow.

Blush Beauty Hacks, By Barbie's Beauty Bits

Face Primer Beauty Hacks:
Primer allows your makeup to adhere better and last longer, with little transparency and minimal fading.  Also, if you have a terrific primer, it will prevent creasing and false wrinkles. Instead of purchasing many different primers, I use a face primer for my face, lips and eyes!

Eyeshadow Beauty Hacks:
Depending on the color of the shadow, you can create a variety of looks with this.
  • Dark colors:
    • Can be used as an eyeliner
    • To hollow your cheeks
    • Fill in your eyebrows
    • Mix with a gloss for a lipstick
    • Blush (if it’s in the brown or pink family)
    • Contour cheeks
    • Add to clear nail polish to make a colored polish.
    • Cover Grays
  • Light colors: A highlighter to both your cheekbone and brow bone

Eyeshadow Beauty Hacks, by Barbie's Beauty Bits

Dry Shampoo Beauty Hacks:
This item is a must have in my hair arsenal! Not only does it absorb the oil in your hair, but it also gives your hair extra volume and lift.  The hack to getting the most of this is always to apply dry shampoo in the beginning when it is clean, at the roots.  Why wait till it’s dirty, this too gives you a few more days of hair.   Another use of dry shampoo, apply it to a bobby pin before your up-do, it will give it a better grip!

So you see, the possibilities are endless!

A DIY Oatmeal Facial Scrub

It’s been a while since I’ve played with some items in my kitchen for a new DIY scrub.  A friend of mine has a spa, and one of the featured treatments was an oatmeal scrub.  It sounded amazing but wasn’t amazing was the cost.  So I decided, what a great idea for a Pantry to Pretty Bit.  The recipe is very similar to hers, but 90% of the cost.

What You’ll Need:
  • ¼ cup of ground whole oats.  I initially attempted to use an old coffee grinder to grind this, but ended up purchasing it at a store for a finer blend.
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • ¼ cup of grape seed oil
  • One tablespoon of lemon
  • You can add milk or water to the mix.  I added milk.
  • You want to mix it all in a bowl, to a thick consistency.
  • Apply to face in a circle motion
  • Leave on for 30 minutes
  • Rinse and wash, moisturize as usual

Storage: The mixture will last a while if stored properly.  If you have a mason jar or something air tight, I'd use that for storage.

The Benefits: Exfoliation of the skin helps with skin rejuvenation. Hence using a gentle mixture like this oatmeal DIY scrub, you'll be able to use it frequently leaving your skin soft and glowing.

Reverse Hair Washing...Have We Been Washing Our Hair Wrong?

The Reverse Hair Washing By Award Winning Beauty Blogger Barbie's Beauty Bits

In the midst of searching for some hot new hair looks, I ran across a headline in Glamour Magazine, which read “Reverse Hair Washing.”  And I was like, what the?  Well, being the want to know all about beauty, I did some further investigation.  Including speaking to Barbie's Beauty Bits go to beauty friends, and here is what I found out…

The Reverse Hair Washing Method

The premise behind reverse hair washing is to help reduce the residue that remains in your hair from the conditioner.  Going about it the “normal” way so to speak, when you wash with shampoo first and then use conditioner, most people end up not completely rinsing out the conditioner.   When this happens, you end up weighing the hair down, which in some cases can cause your hair to become lifeless, flat or, have no volume.  Reversing gives you all the benefits of a great conditioner, minus the residue, leaving you with locks of volume and bounce!

Reverse hair washing method by award winning beauty blogger barbies beauty bits

So how do you do this?
  • You want to make sure that you get your hair thoroughly wet.
  • Disperse the conditioner throughout your hair.
  • Keep it in your hair for a few minutes. So, I recommend doing this in the shower, when you can go and shave your legs, etc.
  • After about 5 minutes, you want to apply the shampoo, WITH THE CONDITIONER STILL in your hair.  The shampoo is what helps to remove the conditioner.
  • Wash and rinse as normal.

IMPORTANT Tips: If you have a lot of product in your dirty hair, it will seem to be a daunting ordeal at first.  This is what I learned.
  1. You must brush your hair before washing it.  Doing this will loosen any hair product(s) you have in your hair, along with helping to detangle.  It will also allow you to work in the conditioner more easily!
  2. You must make sure your hair is very wet.
  3. Use a great conditioner; you get what you pay for when it comes to conditioner. So if you want cheap looking hair, use cheap conditioner.  Otherwise, I recommend a higher-end product. (Sorry but this is one of those products you get what you pay for)
  4. The conditioner needs to stay on the hair for at least 5 minutes. A quick in and out won’t do the job.
pros and cons of reverse hair washing by top beauty blogger barbies beauty bits
PIN ME
Drying.  If you notice, most salons don’t towel dry your hair.  There is a reason for this.   Towels will make your hair frizzy.  I suggest a cotton t-shirt to absorb some of the moisture first.

How Often: Considering I'm new to this, I don't think this is something that you implement every time you wash your hair.  Instead, you want to apply as a Sunday hair wash, as conditioning your hair after shampooing does have some significant benefits IF YOU USE IT THE CORRECT WAY!

So there, hair you have it!

I have only tried this twice. Therefore, I am not making any claims about whether this is a good idea. But I  like to know has anyone else inserted reverse hair washing into your hair routine? It is just a fad, or do you do it all the time? Does it work long term?

UPDATE: Since I've put up this post, with the idea of wondering, "does this premise work,"  I have received some great feedback on both sides, so thank you.  The bottom line, to say this is something you should be doing all the time, is not a good idea as I mentioned when I first tried this method myself.   For the best hair results, you need to use professional quality products the way they instruct. Doing so is going to make your hair healthier and more manageable, and depending on the brand can eliminate the build-up issue. (which is the premise behind the reverse hair washing, to remove the build-up)

PER SOME stylists who have messaged me: "The purpose of shampoo is to eliminate dirt and oil from the hair. The purpose of a conditioner is to add moisture in and any benefits depending on the type of conditioner you use. If your hair is weighing down, you need to use a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks (see the Sunday shampoo below for this). And if you don't use products on your hair and it still weighs down, you're not spending enough time rinsing the conditioner out. I recommend using professional products and NOT from Walmart or Target. They do not carry the same kind of "professional products." You get what you pay for as we say. If you want healthy hair, you've got to take care of it, and it starts with using the correct products."

10 Makeup Tricks To Make Your Eyes Appear Larger

Disclaimer:  This is post contains affiliate links.
10 Makeup Tricks To Make Your Eyes Appear Larger, By Barbie's Beauty Bits

Are you frustrated with your eyes appearing smaller than you'd like? And wish there was something you could do that would quickly brighten them up?  Well, look no further! As today, I'm going to give you my top 10 beauty tricks that will help to make your eyes appear larger. I will also include some of the products I suggest!
  1. Concealer: If you have dark circles under your eyes, they can look smaller. To counter that, you want to use a concealer that can help to even out your skin tone while brightening the eye. Product: Camouflage Cream Palette.
  2. Using The Correct Color Combination Or Light Colored Eye-shadowsCorrectly applying eyeshadow is an art.  But using the colors correctly is the first step in opening up the eyes.  If you use dark colors only, your eyes will recede. However, if you combine with lighter shades, they will help to accentuate your eyes.  The light colors catch the light, giving the illusion of larger eyes.  Product: Urban Decay Naked.
  3. Eyeliner:  Over applying dark eyeliner can make your eyes appear smaller, so please refrain from applying to the inside of the lower lash line.  It is ok to apply some eyeliner to the outer lower line. And only about a quarter of the way in from the out corner of your eye.  Do not extend to the tear duct. You can also give your eyes that extra pop by using multiple colors. If choosing this option,  you can extend to tear duct & lower lash line. But you need to select colors that compliment your eyes. Otherwise, you'll make them appear smaller.  Product: Urban Decay Ten 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil Set.
  4. White:  Using the color white near the inner corner of your eyes and your waterline, will give the illusion of larger eyes.   You can use a white eyeliner, an illuminator, or white eye shadow. Product: NYX Retractable Eyeliner.
  5. A Great Mascara:  If you follow my blog you know I love mascara.  When choosing mascara to help make your eyes appear larger, you want to use one that adds volume and separates.  Too Faced Better Than Sex and Urban Decays Perversion are my name brand mascara favs.  When applying, I like to add more emphasis on the corner of the eyes as well as near the tear duct.
  6. Eyelash Curler: Curl up baby! An eyelash curler has been around for years; there's a  reason for it.  This bad boy can take your limp lashes to curly in 15 seconds.  A curled lash can make your eyes appeared more open.  Product: Heated Eyelash Curler Or a Regular Version for only a $1.00 by e.l.f.
  7.  False Eyelashes: False eyelashes can do wonders for your eyes instantly.  However, applying them can be tricky. But fret no more as the trick to making this foolproof is using the glue correctly.  You want to apply the glue to the upper lash line, instead of applying it directly to the falsie! By doing it this way, you’ll be able to move the lash around, and it won’t stick to places it shouldn’t.  Product: Ardell Lashes & don't forget the glue Revlon Precision Lash Adhesive.
  8. Nude pencil: As I mentioned above, how dark eyeliner can make your eyes appear smaller. Doing the opposite with a nude colored pencil will make your eyes pop. Nude works great for everyone, including those with darker skin or when you wear dark colored shadows, as white can be too harsh for some.   Using a nude eyeliner or even a contouring pencil can help brighten up your look. Product:  Rimmel London ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner.
  9. Eyebrows: Similar to a great frame that can take an ordinary picture to a different level.  I view your eyebrows as such.   Great looking eyebrows can form a frame around your eyes bringing your features forward. Product: e.l.f. brow set
  10. Illuminator: Highlighting is all over the internet; there is a reason for this.  Using a great highlighter/illuminator in the corner of your eyes, your brow bone, as well as dabbing it in the middle of your lid, will give you an instance lift and brighten your look instantly.  Product: Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder Compact
Bonus: I know I said 10 tips, but I decided to give you a little bonus... With a way to test some of these out, prior to purchasing the products.  And the best part is you can do this right from your phone.  How? With the GlamSt. App. the first virtual makeup tester, it’s a makeup lover’s dream come true.

GlamST is an app for iOS that allows you to discover new makeup by choosing the styles you love and trying makeup on your photo. You can freely experiment from the comfort of your phone, try on makeup by snapping a selfie, choosing your style and seeing how makeup would really look on your face.  The iOS app is NOW available, and it is awesome!

The Secret To Finding A Bra That Fits; With Your Sister Size!

The Secret To Finding A Bra That Fits; With Your Sister Size, By Barbie's Beauty Bits.

Today, I’m going to write a blog post on something that I did research on to help myself.  Finding a bra that fits and one that doesn’t look like what I call, a grandma sling shot, is a rarity for me.  It doesn’t matter what my measurements come out to, I can’t ever seem to find a bra in all styles that fit my size.  Furthermore, the larger you go up, the less “sexy” they seem to get, which seems bizarre to me...  I mean the larger the chest, the uglier the bra gets.  DID YOU HEAR THAT MEN?

Any who, I heard the ladies at Victoria's Secret make reference to my “sister size”,  so I decided to investigate exactly how these sisters work!

So how does this work?
  • Well, first and foremost you must be measured. As going by a bra that fits you at one store is not true sizing.
  • Once you find your true band and cup size, you can go on your search for your long lost sisters.
  • Either go UP to the next BAND size & DOWN to the next CUP size. OR you can go DOWN to the NEXT BAND size & GO UP to the next CUP size.
  • What??? Kind of sounded like twisted sisters to me, but once you see the below it will make better sense!!

Sister Bra Size Samples:

34A=32B or Vice Versa
34B=32C or Vice Versa
36D=34DD or Vice Versa

After some further investigation, I also located some more additional ways to determine your sister sizes in a bra.  But rather then explaining them by each bra size, I recreated an image below to illustrate.   Needless to say, I am so excited that I now have more options, I guess the "secret" is out!

Ladies, don't forget to comment and if you have any more tips for finding the right bra, please share!

Your correct sister bra size by Barbie's Beauty Bits

IMPORTANT: Regardless of your measurements, I  strongly recommend that you try on the bras.  I'm sure a sales associate would disagree with me on this, but I find that a size at one store does not always fit the same as another.  You can't argue with your measurements, but they don't always match up with the size on the tag.

The Quickest Way To Chill Wine

The Quickest Way To Chill Wine, By Barbie's Beauty Bits

Wine is one of my loves, and similar to makeup, I have a few DIY tips up my sleeve about it.  If you are having a last minute dinner party and need a chilled bottle of wine quickly, this is a bit you want to know about.

The quickest way to chill wine is with salt! Yes, salt is the magic ingredient to chilling wine quickly.

So How To?
  1. Fill a bucket with ice, water and add about ½ cup of salt.
  2. Place the bottle of wine in the middle of the mixture.
  3. Leave for 10 minutes, and your wine is quickly chilled!
So, why does salt quickly chill the wine? Because salt lowers the freezing point of the ice, hence make the water around it colder quicker.

Cheers, until next time!

Coffee Facials

Coffie facial by barbies beuaty bits

It’s been a while since my last Pantry to Pretty bit.  But today's is one that will really PERK you up!

This tip is from a close friend of mine, who pick this up while in California.  I guess with all the sun there; this spa treatment has been a "Grande" beauty bit… A skin treatment from espresso coffee grounds!   Yes, coffee grounds.  You see coffee grounds contain anti-oxidant agents that help in protecting the skin from free radicals, hence decreasing the risk of skin cancer.  In addition to this, the caffeine contributes to tightening the pores.  Yeah!

Considering, I consume a lot of coffee; this D.I.Y. coffee facial was easy to test out. See the recipe below I brewed up.

Coffee Facial Scrub:
  • 1/4 cup of ground espresso beans
  • 2 table spoons of olive oil or you can use a combination of coconut oil & olive oil
  • Apply to face in a circular motion
  • Leave on for a 4 mins.
  • Rinse
A DIY coffee facial by Barbies Beauty Bits

I applied the mixture to my face, neck and decolletage. I found that this mask helped to remove the dead skin cells, plus I liked how it made my skin feel.  One downside was the grind.  If you are one that is not used to doing a lot of facials, you may want to consider sticking to a finer coffee ground for your face. A larger grind works better for areas you can be a little rougher on. Lastly, the area will be red for a bit, so don't be alarmed.

So there you have a beauties, another Pantry to Pretty Bit, until next time!

Tea Please; The Unusual Uses For Tea

Tea Please; The Unusual Uses For Tea By Barbie's Beauty Bits

The crazy things your parents did when you were younger either will haunt you, or as an adult you will see the crazy benefits and repeat them.  Well, this pantry to pretty bit is one of those embarrassing childhood memories... Don't Tease Tea's Me Please.  Yes, this is a post about tea; the unusual uses for tea bags to be exact!

Stinky Shoes:  This is the one my mom used to always do, minus the embarrassing story. Which is to place a tea bag in each shoe.  The tea bag would absorb the stinky odor! Tea bags also work great for gym bags.

A Cleaning Solution:  Brew your old tea bags to make a cleaning solution.  The tea will help cut the grime from your mirrors and counter-tops. IMPORTANT: You want to make sure when using it on your counter-tops that it doesn't stain.  Some older or cheaper counters, I would refrain from using this solution on them.

A Soothing Relief:   Tea bags are also great for soothing cuts, sunburns, and swollen eyes.  Here are some additional tips on bagging those puffy eyes.

Removing Hair Build Up:  This one I got from my friend Teresa and I just recently tried it.  It really works wonders on removing build up from hair products.
  •  How To: For this you are brewing some tea, once brewed take the warm tea and rinse it through your hair.  I would also be careful if you blond hair, I'm not sure if this will effect the color, so be cautious.

So next time, instead of tossing that tea bag over board, keep it! Bon Voyage!

Take Two Aspirin and…The Different Uses For Aspirin

The Different Uses For Aspirin by Barbie's Beauty Bits

There are a lot of different uses for aspirin aside from medical. Today, I’m going to share with you some benefits for your head; of hair that is. These unusual uses for aspirin work because of the  salicylic acid in the them. So without further ado...

Hair Color:

This one, fortunately I’ve never had to use.  But my sister (sorry sis), used this remedy when we were kids for her green hair.
The sun and blond may go together, but chlorine isn’t always a blonde’s best friend.  If you’ve ever had your hair turn a greenish color from chlorine, no need to scream, as an aspirin can clear it up.

How To:

  • Take 8 aspirins and let them dissolve in some bottled water.
  • Shake it up to make sure all is dissolved.
  • Pour the solution into a hair coloring bottle and distribute on your hair.
  • Leave it on your hair for 10 minutes and wash.
  • Depending on the extent of the green, you may have to do a couple of washes.

Dandruff Control:

No need to purchase two shampoo’s, as you can make your regular shampoo a dandruff control shampoo. By adding some aspirins to it!

How To:
  • Pour some shampoo into a small travel bottle.
  • Crush 2 aspirins in some aluminum foil.
  • Take the aluminum foil and use it as a funnel to pour the crushed aspirin into the travel shampoo bottle.
  • Mix with a stir stick.
  • Wash as usual.

Remove Product Build Up:

Follow the same recipe you would for the dandruff shampoo.  But after shampooing,  you want to make sure that you deep condition,  to add moisture back to your hair.

So hair, there you have it, another pantry to pretty bit!
