Redefining Beauty: Ditch These 4 Outdated Beauty Ideas

Forget the rulebook because beauty is rewriting itself! Gone are the days of rigid beauty standards. Today, diversity walks the runway, acceptance graces the cover of magazines, and individuality is the hottest trend.

We are in a time where every shade of skin, every body type, and every unique feature should be celebrated. We're finally dismantling the myth of a singular ideal and embracing the beauty spectrum in all its glorious forms.

But hold on! While the world of beauty is evolving, I still hear some outdated ideas that could be lingering in your head.

Let's expose these myths for what they are. In this post, Barbie' Beauty Bits will discuss four outdated ideas and empower you to rewrite your beauty story. Get ready to ditch that outdated rulebook and embrace the unique you!

Why Am I Writing This? Ditch the Myth: There's One Right Way To Be Beautiful

Binge-watching Netflix's "Love is Blind" inspired me to write this blog post. In the show, couples try to build a connection based solely on personality and sight unseen. If they fall in love, they get engaged without seeing each other. One couple, Taylor and JP, when they finally met face-to-face, things went south really fast!

I was confused by JP's distant behavior (he barely said a word, and this is a TV show where he talked all the time). We all discovered why he wouldn't speak to her: He didn't like her "dressed-up" look, with makeup and eyelashes. He even made rude comments, implying that women who wear makeup are fake—a major turn-off for him.

Seriously?! This is Love is Blind, remember? The point is to fall for someone's inner beauty, not appearance. Shouldn't JP have communicated his preference for someone who did not wear makeup without resorting to rudeness?

Fueled by his outdated and narrow-minded beauty ideals, which led him to label everyone who gets all dolled up as fake. And this my beauties is the exact reason we need to have this conversation. It's time to ditch these tired myths and empower everyone to define their version of beauty!

misconceptions-about-cosmetic-procedures-barbies-beauty-bits

Ditch The "Aging Gracefully" Judgement

The concept of "aging gracefully" often gets tossed around, implying quiet acceptance of wrinkles and the passage of time. But here's the thing: aging is a privilege, not a punishment. While appreciating the gift of growing older is essential, that doesn't mean sacrificing your confidence.

Beauty standards constantly evolve, and feeling your best at any age shouldn't be considered a rebellion against nature.

There's no shame in exploring cosmetic procedures, whether it's a subtle tweak or something more transformative like a breast augmentation. The key lies in doing it for yourself, not societal expectations or what a significant other may think. It is your body and your decision.

If a little nip and tuck or a touch of rejuvenation makes you feel more radiant, then that's graceful aging in its truest form – it's about embracing your own definition of beauty throughout life's journey.

Myth 2: Natural Beauty Is Superior

Everyone has natural beauty; it’s just a matter of perspective. What you may not like about yourself could be the best part about you for someone else.

That said, the key lies in embracing your individuality, not striving for some idealized version of "natural." Whether you rock bold makeup daily, prefer to wear hair extensions, want to dye those grays, or love a flamboyant clothing style, that's what makes you.

Beauty tips for a more confident you could include cosmetic treatments and eyelash extensions as ways to enhance your confidence and express yourself creatively. The idea that you are somehow "lesser" for not adhering to a narrow definition of "natural" is a myth that we can happily leave behind. The truest form of beauty is embracing your unique style and radiating confidence from the inside out.

Myth 3: Expensive Products Are Always Better

"Expensive Products Are Always Better" is not always the case. And you must be happy to hear that! Sometimes, expensive products can be overhyped, contain too much of one active ingredient, or may not match your preferences.

Do you really need a celebrity-endorsed makeup palette to look good? Not really. Therefore, it's always better to go for what works for you, experiment, and not worry if you need to pick up the discount option from time to time. You can still look fabulous.

Myth 4: Skincare Is For When You Are Older? Not So Fast!

This is a common myth that drives me crazy. And I can tell by the looks of the people's skin who believe it! But here's the truth: skincare is an investment in your skin's future, not a last-ditch effort to regain lost youth.

Think about it—it is much easier to maintain than repair. The sooner you start, the sturdier and healthier your skin will be in the long run.

Like a car needs regular maintenance to prevent major repairs, consistent skincare helps protect your skin from daily aggressors like sun damage, pollution, and environmental stressors. Starting early helps prevent the formation of wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation down the road.

While many skincare products and gadgets are available, don't be overwhelmed. Begin with the basics: cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. These skincare tips for beginners create a foundation for healthy, resilient skin.

Plus, good skincare helps your makeup perform its best. Imagine applying foundation without settling into fine lines – that's the magic of a consistent skincare routine. It's not about covering imperfections but creating a canvas that allows your natural beauty to shine through.

The Bottom Line: Embrace Your Definition of Beauty

We've explored and debunked four outdated beauty ideas, hopefully empowering you to define beauty on your own terms. It's important to remember that preferences exist – some people might prefer a no makeup  while others love a bold makeup look. There's no single "right" way to be beautiful.

The key takeaway? Embrace your individuality! Whether you love rocking your lash game or want to try some cosmetic procedures, it's all about feeling confident and expressing yourself authentically. Beauty comes from self-love and celebrating what makes you unique.

So ditch the outdated beauty rules and embrace your own version of beautiful!

The Truth About Face Lift Scars: Myths vs. Facts

The Truth About Face Lift Scars: Myths vs. Facts

Sunshine, Laughter, and a Little Facelift Talk

Sunshine, laughter, and a little beauty talk about sagging skin and facial aging– that's what unfolded during my recent visit to Florida with a friend. We were catching up, and her mom's interest in facelifts came up in conversation.

My friend mentioned her mom's desire for the procedure but also her fear of scars. "But the scars!" she exclaimed, echoing a common concern many people have. I assured her that advancements in techniques have made facelift scars much less noticeable and that many of the fears surrounding them are actually myths.

Here at Barbie's Beauty Bits, we understand these concerns can be a barrier for those considering a facelift. As I've addressed this topic before, but it seems some myths have the longevity of a Florida tan.

So, let's clear the air and separate fact from fiction when it comes to facelift scars!

Facelift Scars: Myths You Hear (But Shouldn't Believe!)

Myth #1: Facelift Scars Are Always Large And Noticeable

One of the biggest concerns about facelift scars is the fear that they will be permanently large and visible. However, understanding a few key factors can easily debunk this myth.

First, a skilled surgeon prioritizes minimizing scar visibility from the very beginning. This starts with strategically placing incisions in inconspicuous locations, like along your hairline or natural facial folds. These placements significantly reduce the chances of scars being easily noticeable.

Second, your individual healing response during the facelift recovery also plays a role. Following your doctor's post-surgical care instructions meticulously is crucial for achieving the best possible outcome. This includes sun protection, which can darken scars, and potentially using scar-minimizing treatments recommended by your doctor. These steps significantly improve the chances of scars fading and becoming less noticeable.

By choosing a qualified surgeon who prioritizes minimizing visible scarring and following post-surgical care instructions, you can significantly reduce the size and visibility of facelift scars, allowing you to enjoy the results of your surgical facelift with confidence.

Myth #2: Facelift Scars Will Cause Permanent Numbness Or Tingling Sensations

It's a common misconception that facelift scars will cause permanent numbness or tingling sensations in the treated areas of the face. While some temporary numbness or altered sensation may occur immediately after surgery due to the disruption of nerves during the procedure, this typically resolves over time.

Skilled surgeons take great care to minimize nerve damage during surgery, and nerves can regenerate and restore sensation gradually as healing progresses.

Post-operative care, including gentle massage and sensory retraining exercises, can further facilitate nerve recovery and help alleviate any residual numbness or tingling sensations.

Myth #3: Face Lift Scars Never Fade

Myth 3 facelift scars are that they never fade. With time and proper care, most facelift scars will significantly lighten and become less noticeable. This process involves your skin's natural healing ability and can be aided by once again following post-surgery care instructions from your doctor.

Your surgeon might recommend treatments or products that help heal and make scars less visible. For instance, specific scar treatments like silicone gel sheets or gentle massage techniques can be applied to promote optimal healing and minimize scar visibility.

Myth #4: Everyone Will Know You've Had a Face Lift Because of the Scars

One significant worry for many considering a facelift surgery is the fear of noticeable scars revealing their secret of getting a facelift. But here's why that concern is an outdated myth:

  • Modern Techniques for Minimized Scars: Advancements in surgical techniques prioritize minimizing scar visibility. Beyond incision placement, skilled surgeons utilize advanced suture techniques that reduce tension on the wound, leading to finer and less noticeable scars.
  • Focus on Healing: The entire surgical process, from the type of anesthesia used to the meticulous closure of the incisions, is designed to promote optimal healing and reduce scar formation. This includes minimizing inflammation and maintaining proper blood flow to the area.

While some temporary swelling and redness are expected post-surgery, these subside as healing progresses. If you're concerned about scar placement or visibility, contact the best plastic surgeon in Miami to discuss your options and ensure the best outcome with natural-looking results.

Skincare Tips A Beauty Influencer Learned From An Esthetician

Skincare Tips A Beauty Influencer Learned From An Esthetician, By Beauty Blogger Barbies Beauty Bits

Today I will share with you seven tips I learned from an esthetician.

I have been working in the skincare industry for over ten years. During this time, I've gained tons of knowledge, training, and education. You see, I am not just an international awarding beauty blogger/influencer. I also have my own marketing boutique where I provide marketing services for those in the beauty industry, primarily skincare. I offer various services from handling social media to email marketing and being a ghostwriter for multiple clients within the skincare realm catering to different skincare brands, dermatologists, plastics surgeons, and of course, estheticians.

And as with anything in life, experience comes education but also comes from mistakes. And today, I am going to debunk some things I've learned over the years that were incorrect. Skincare tips I relearned from my favorite esthetician, Pila from Heaven on Earth Day Spa, in Aspen, Colorado.

Tip 1: Your Skincare Doesn't Suck; It Has Reached A Plateau
I now love saying this to people. But the truth is it's not a matter of your skin getting used to the products. A product can only do but so much. There comes the point where those ingredients have done all they could do for your skin... They have hit a plateau. Just like when you have been trying to lose weight and hit your positive energy balance, you will stop losing pounds. When this happens you try something new-maybe recalculate your caloric intake, add more protein, or try a different workout.

It is the same with your skin: You found a fantastic skincare line, you see the viable improvement, but then it comes to a halt. Or this that happens to me frequently. There is a skincare product so many love; I try it, and it doesn't do anything for me, and I think this product sucks. No, the ingredients are still working, but they're maintaining a new normal. Your skin has come accustomed to that ingredient or skincare product. So if you’ve been doing the same-old-same-old, you’ve hit a plateau, and your skin is not getting where you want it to, your skincare doesn't suck. It's time to try something new!

Are you over exfoliating your skin by barbies beauty bits

Tip 2: You Can Over Exfoliate The Skin
If you follow my blog regularly, you will notice I talk about exfoliation all the time. Exfoliation is an essential part of a skincare routine. You see, as we age, the process of desquamation slows down, meaning that our body is slower to shed dead skin cells and produce new ones. Exfoliating is a successful way to speed up your natural cellular turnover to uncover the fresh, healthy skin underneath the layers of dead surface skin cells. Also, which is why I talk about exfoliating the skin so much, it is fantastic at...

  • Diminishing fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minimizing the appearance of age spots and other sun damage
  • Evening out skin tone and texture
  • Unclogging and reducing the appearance of pore size
  • Stimulating blood flow to help improve the skin's elasticity
  • Offering better penetration of your skincare products

Exfoliation sounds like youthful perfection, doesn't it? Well, that is what I thought until I found out from Pila, we can overdo it. If you exfoliate the skin too often, the skin’s barrier function can become compromised. Your skin can become dehydrated, and capillaries can become damaged (the capillaries are something I see from my thinning skin).

Generally, the skin should be exfoliated only one to two times per week to help expedite skin cell turnover without causing damage. Yup, one to two times per week...WHAT??? If you’ve been slathering on the exfoliating acids daily or using a sonic cleansing device, like myself, there’s a good chance you are over-exfoliating.

why you should not put food on your face by barbies beauty bits

Tip 3: Your Face Is Not Your Stomach, So Stop Putting Food On It
The expression you are what you eat; has never been more real than when it comes to your skin! Healthy skin starts with healthy foods containing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are good for the body and your skin.

Leave it to Instagram, where some have taken this to all new heights by applying actual food on your face. While this may seem like a good idea, in theory, it is a bad idea, according to my esthetician! But why?

Your face, stomach, and digestive tract work in quite different ways. Our skin is our largest organ, and it serves many purposes. One is to protect and keep things out of the body. Your stomach absorbs necessary nutrients and then delivers them to your skin via the blood.

Hence, putting food on your face with the hopes of getting the nutrients to where it is needed to make a difference isn't the best solution. Why? Because the molecules from food are generally too large to do any good and will most likely end up irritating your skin, not helping it.

Skincare products are created using ingredients that are chirally corrected (or purified). With chirally correct ingredients, skincare products will provide better, more potent and effective results with minimized irritation or adverse reactions. So, if you are looking for skincare with ingredients from fruits and vegetables. An excellent skincare line is SKINFOOD.

Should you put coconut oil on your face by barbies beauty bits

Tip 4: You Should Not Use Coconut Oil On Your Face
Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don't... coconut, that is! Boy, do I love me some coconut oil. I use an organic brand of coconut oil that is hardened to exfoliate and cleanse my face, and it works wonders for me. Which is why I was surprised when I was told, "Coconut oil is comedogenic and will clog your pores as it sits on top of the skin."  So my new solution? Use a cleansing oil like Purify Botanic Cleansing Oil that includes active ingredients like squalene, a fantastic antioxidant that is great at improving the skin's appearance and health.

The benefits of microneedling your hand by barbies beauty bits

Tip 5: You Can Use A Microneedle On Your Hand
Our hands are one of the places that can show your actual age, and the truth is they are often an afterthought when it comes to anti-aging treatments. While many may put on a lotion, we usually only do it during the winter, when our hands are dry and chap. But not thinking our hands need anti-aging treatments as well.

The truth is there’s less muscle volume and very little fat and collagen on our hands. The small amounts of collagen break down quicker than other parts of the body. Making our hands more prone to wrinkles and, worse, a loss of collagen, and the skin becomes loose and starts sagging. I'm looking at my hands now, and they look about 20 years older than the rest of my body! Yuk!

And this is where Micro-needling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), can help as it aids in tightening the skin on the hands and gives it a smooth texture.

Dryer sheets can clog your pores by barbies beauty bits

Tip 6: Dryer Sheets And Fabric Softener Clogs Your Pores
While those dryer sheets may smell so wonderful, they are not so wonderful for your skin. I knew this, as I am sensitive to a lot of fragrances. I was not aware that they could leave a waxy residue that will clog your pores. Especially in the days of Maskne, this is something we need to be thinking about when washing and drying those darn face masks.

Are pore strips bad for the skin barbies beauty bits

Tip 7: Pore Strips Cause Broken Capillaries
While this does not personally apply to me as I would never use pore strips as I know they are not safe, I did not know they can also cause broken (collapsed) capillaries. For us beauties over forty, the skin is already becoming weaker and thinner, making us more prone to broken blood vessels. You do not need to add to that by using a pore strip.

For those currently using pore strips, why not consider replacing them with an exfoliator containing salicylic acid, clay-based masks, and even prescription-strength retinol (which will also increase cell turnover). Just what us beauties over forty want!
