Recently, I came across an article that cited a study conducted by the Journal of Applied Microbiology, which found that beauty sponges were the most contaminated beauty item. Shockingly, 93% of them were uncleaned, and 56.96% of them were contaminated with fungi. Even more alarming was the number of people who dropped their used beauty sponges on the floor and reused them.


As I shared in an article on Style Craze, dirty makeup tools compromise makeup application and pose risks to skin health. To maintain hygiene, it's essential to clean brushes and sponges weekly, using gentle cleansers, and consider replacing sponges more frequently. This routine ensures better makeup results and safeguards skin health by preventing the transfer of harmful microorganisms.


To maintain proper cleanliness and hygiene, it is recommended that you wash your brushes with a mild brush cleanser or baby shampoo at least once a week. After washing:

 

  • Wipe off excess water.
  • Shape the brushes.
  • Lay them flat on a clean towel or a drying mat.

 

It's important to ensure that the bristles hang slightly off the edge of the surface, allowing air to circulate around them. Never dry your brushes upright, as water can trickle down into the handle, causing damage over time.


For sponges, wash them by hand, squeeze them, and leave them in a cool, dry place to dry. You should consider replacing them every few months. Proper tool hygiene reduces the risk of spreading bacteria back onto your skin.
